Scale ACT 2007

Hosted by the ACT Scale Modellers' Society

AMMS made the pilgrimage down the highway again this year to the Bush Capital for Scale ACT 2007. Strong contingents from Wagga Wagga and Dubbo were also in attendance.

The ACT SMS guys again showed us wonderful hospitality if the fragility evident the morning after Saturday night's dinner is anything to go by!

Frank Morgan from ModelArt Australia magazine was on hand taking loads of pics. So you can expect to see much better quality pics than these in the near future in ModelArt.

Best of Show

Bismark - Then ...
... and Now!

Best of Show went to an old friend - Bill Baird's amazing Bismark "Before and After" diorama (sea-orama??). This great work took out Best of Show at the NSW Scale Model Comeition & Expo in Wollongong two weeks before Scale ACT. Next to an immaculate model of the Bismark in all its glory was a depiction of the ship as she was rediscovered in 1989 at the bottom of the sea. An impressive amount of etch (and time) went into these beauties.

The photography doesn't really do it justice, but enjoy anyway:

The following images are recycled from our coverage of the 2007 Gong Show:

Special Category: Sentinel Shield

This year's subject kit was the Dragon 1:72 scale T34. These pics show just what a wide range of renditions you can get out of the box from what is generally supposed to be a "drab" subject!

Armour WWII Non-German (Large Scale)

A well-supported category this year. The Churchill AVRE was by Mic Bradshaw from Melbourne and took out the best of category. The first two models shown (the T34s) were the Trumpeter 1:16 scale kits.

Armour WWII German (Large Scale)

Another well-supported category. A number of entries were actually scratchbuilt such as the Katchen 38(t)-based APC.

Armour Post War (Large Scale)

wide spread of entries in terms of conflicts and nationality. We were particularly impressed by the 1:25 scale Australian Centurion (post Vietnam). The Bradley was kit bashed from Tamiya and Academy kits, with extensive scratchbuilding of details such as the sensor housing behind the commander's position.

Armour Halftracks and Armoured Cars (Large Scale)

Armour (Mid Scale)

The 48th Hetzer featured in the first two images featured at Wollongong where it took out the Small Scale AFV category - and whoops it did it again, taking out best in class for Mid Scale Armour!

Dioramas & Vignettes

Aircraft WWII US (Large Scale)

Aircraft Postwar (Large Scale)

Aircraft Civil (Small Scale)

Aircraft Pre-1939 (Small Scale)

Aircraft WWII Allied Single Engined (Small Scale)

Aircraft Post War Jet Engined (Small Scale)

Conclusion

Entries were up on last year and the Canberra show continues to attract modellers from areas as far as Dubbo, Wagga Wagga, as well as Sydney, Wollongong and Melbourne.

The organisers did another solid job this year and Scale ACT continues to be a major fixture on the local modelling calendar.
